Dad's Turkey

Just wanted to share some pics and the story of dad's turkey.  We went out Saturday, the last day we had on our permit.  I harvested a jake 2 weeks ago in this spot, and we had some pics of 2 nice toms who frequent the area.  4:00am wake up, out of the house by 4:30.  We are lucky to hunt less than 5 minutes from dad's house on a beautiful Pittstown farm that belongs to one of dad's long time friends.  We were hunting the edge of a wheat field with a patch of woods directly behind us.  We got the decoys set up and settled in our blind to a light rain by 4:50.  As we are waiting for it to get light, we hear him gobbling behind us.  He's roosted close and gobbling and gobbling.  It was great to hear him let the woods know he is boss.  As it gets light, we hear a faint yelping, then could hear someone fly down.  My dad is legally blind, and does not have peripheral vision, so I was the spotter.  I could just see the edge of the woods and saw a hen fly out to the edge of the wheat.  25 yards below us.  Dad softly yelps, he hollers, still behind us.  Then I heard him fly down, and gobble.  He then comes out following her, and puts on a show.  Dancing for his girls along the edge of the field.  another hen, a HUGE one, comes out and he continues to dance.  Its to our hard left, still 25 yards.  We don't call, just wait.  After 20 minutes of watching the best show Mother Nature can do, the hens start to make their way up the field edge to us.  I tell dad, here they come, he has the gun up and ready, takes the safety off and we are ready.  First hen comes by and looks in the blind, then Henzilla follows and also gives us the stink eye.  We are no more than 3 yards from them, I didn't even want to blink, they are that close.    The tom comes up behind, 3 yards from us, blue and red head, puffed out and makes a beeline for our decoys.  He puts his back to us, fanning out at the decoys, now about 20 yards from us, dancing around.  Dad waits for him to turn and stick his head out, and the TC Encore did the rest.  A perfect day, a storybook turkey hunt, and memories I won't forget.  It was done and over by 5 minutes after 6am.   20 pounds, 10 inch beard, spurs were just over an inch and sharp!
