Car Batteries, So Damn Expensive

Recommended Posts

I needed a car battery for my commuter car, best price was WalMart $107.00 with the best warranty I saw but not in stock at any store or online and shipped to store. Best next price was PepBoys, so off I went this morning, hell let them install it as it was part of the price, no need to get my hands dirty. Ordered online, drove to the store, in/out in 10 minutes !!! It was $139.00, all other places wanted $170.00 or better.

Walmart batteries are junk, you're best bet is to find someone with an account with an auto parts supplier... eastern auto parts or one of those companies. They're normally about 60% of retail cost

people I know never had issues with the WalMart batteries, plus I could careless if the warranty is great that is important

I disagree with Walmart batteries being junk.

Walmart batteries are made by Johnson Controls which also makes most other brands of car batteries, including Optima. The walmart batteries are supposed to be made to the specs of the old champions (so I heard).

Best battery I ever owned was a Champion in my 95 ram. I still have that truck and only recently did I have to replace the champion battery, the battery lasted from 99-2016 so....17 years. Truly lived up to it's name.

The warranty on the walmart batts and low price actually makes them a great deal. I've had them in several of our other vehicles and they do the job. Don't know if I'd put them in a hard to crank diesel or a boat, but most everyday vehicles, no problem.

I don't know anything about their oil. Good? Bad?

I happen to think most oil is probably decent enough if you don't drive in very harsh conditions and change it regularly. Or use blackstone labs for a test to see how your oil is performing and when you really need to change it. I still like 3000 miles even though now most do 5000 and now they have "yearly oil"....

There are probably just a few battery manufacturers and they put whoever's label on them.

Ask me how I know !  Oh, funny you should ask !

Many years ago, back in the 60's, I worked in Rahway for Purolator Filters.

The filters came down the assembly line and one went to the left and one went to the right, one after another into the spray booth.

They came out the other end, the ones from the left booth were white and the ones from the right booth were orange.

The white ones were stamped with the Purolator name and the orange ones were stamped with FRAM !

I thought, growing old would take longer !

I spent most of my money on shotguns and fly rods.  The rest I just wasted.
