My daughter got her first!

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to get my daughter into hunting for a while, but she's been hesitant. A few weeks ago she told me she'd like to try but she's not sure she can shoot a deer. So, I suggested a boar and she said it sounded good. So we made an appointment at Moonshine Ranch in PA. It's a canned hunt, but I thought it would be a good first hunt for her. They have about 200 acres behind a fence. It wasn't easy as the hogs were on high alert. We hadn't gotten a shot all morning and we had been stalking back and forth. A little after lunch we see 4 hogs running through the brush. She sets up next to a tree to try to catch them as they cross a pretty tight open area before they get into more brush.

Well she made a great shot leaning against a tree with her single shot 243 and put down a running hog at 63 yards.

She had a blast and wants to get her license now. She even helped with field dressing. Man....it was an awesome day!

Ps. I had posted a while back for advice. She is left eye dominant but right handed. Based on advice received we had her practice lefty and she was more comfortable that way....thx to all who replied to that thread!20170415_094509.jpg20170415_115903.jpg20170415_115922.jpg

Not sure on the weight. I'm guessing 200 to 250. It wasnt easy to get in the truck.

Congrats to both of you.

I thought canned hunts included handling of the game after is was down in the cost?  Why did you choose that preserve?  I'm considering a similar hog hunt myself.

Yes, it included field dressing, transport, skinning and quartering. I was just helping the guys lift it into their truck...i didnt have to.

I didn't want to deal with the quarters so I asked them to transport to a butcher who cuts up and vacuum seals..the butchering is extra.

695 for the hog. Plus tip.

I chose them because its not too far and they have 200 acres. I talked to the owner and the area is not subdivided. I talked to a guy who did a canned hunt at Tioga. He told me they have alot of acres but its subdivided amongst the species....so he said the hog hunt was probably only in 40 acres or so (his guess). I would definitely recommend Moonshine. They treated us well and were great with my daughter. They have a good web site...just Google them. The owner is Lou....good guy.

They also have free range turkey and whitetail too.
