For the Fly Fishing guys, a question about lines

Recommended Posts

I think this question is basic/silly, inexperienced guy here

I have a nice reel spooled with some sink line (about 10 ft in the front), 8wt

but I want to fish dry flies, let's say, for some carp

question,

Can I cut the sink part of the line and fish the float line only, and then

if I need to use the sinking part could just tie them back ?

never used a sinker before, I assume I can cut the sinker

just wondering if there is something I am missing here .

TIA

Yes you can cut it, but It will not work as intended.

You need an 8wt line, double taper is best for dry flies, BECAUSE, the line is tapered down to where you tie on the tippet that is tied to the fly.

Then when you cast the line rolls over and the fly doesn't slam into the water.... it lands and floats on top a a dry is intended.

I thought, growing old would take longer !

I spent most of my money on shotguns and fly rods.  The rest I just wasted.

You definitely do not want to cut a sink line as the rest of that line will be a level line without taper.  In other words, it won't cast for a damn because it won't load the rod which is where the power in the cast comes from.  Best to buy a regular floating line for the 8 weight.  Lines are expensive in fly fishing, so be ready for some sticker shock.  I thank God I don't have to pay for mine!
