sears and roebuck catalog

I was listening to some country and came across the lyrics ... "He bought it new out of a Sears and Roebuck catalog"...

Now, I'm not THAT old, but I heard stories that you used to be able to order firearms from the Sears catalog (fess up - who here is old enough to be able to say you bought one yourself :) )... so I decided to do a quick Google search out of curiosity:

If you are into nostalgia, look at some of those links on that page.

Revolvers and semi-autos for sale in 1917 - can you imagine today? "Yes, I'd like to order a Colt revolver and... what the hell, throw in one of those .45 autos. Here's $40, keep the change."

Here's shotguns from 1914 catalog:

My Stevens 12 side by side came from sears. also, Montgomery Ward sold firearms and boats -motors.  Both had extensive sporting goods lines. Stores were few so Mail Order was the way to go for most of the Americas,

But Monkie Ward went out somewhere around the 50s Sears was King and today it is Crap. and on their way out closing stores after stores.  and good riddance.

My first shotgun was purchased from BEST. Mossberg 500 with 28" VR barrel, 3 chokes, and smooth bore slug barrel for $189.00. Got it in 1989 for Christmas.

Wow! Best was a good store. I also bought a shotgun from them. I think it was 1980. Stevens 311. I still have it and it shoots! Rt 38 in MoTwn.

I now own my grandfather's 30-30 he bought from a Sears catalog around 1941 for something like $15.  It was the norm back then.  Funny how we went from catalog by mail, to buying from stores in person, to now buying off the internet and getting things by mail once again.  Guns being an exception, of course.

I now own my Uncle's 30-30. I don't know where it was bought but it was bought in 1955.

I know my grandfather's lever action Remington is from a mail order I've been told. Sadly he passed when I was 1 was the only one in the family who hunted and my cousin has possession of the gun ????
