Making some Traditional Feathers

Recommended Posts

Been saving wings for many years, always wanting to make some of my own fletchings.

Got a set of little choppers for Christmas, so decided to strip a few feathers down to give it a try.

Def will be grinding a bunch this week.

will be cool shooting something with feathers from a turkey I harvested with the bow, and cut myself

When I was making arrows I stripped mine and used a scissor to cut the shape, don't need to be perfect, just needs to stabilize.  Of course if your going for a look then the chopper is the way to go.  I used fletch-tape instead of glue.

See video if interested.

Nice! Undied wild turkey fletch has better natural h2o repellency than other feathers except maybe goose, which is sooo plain jane. jo-jan straight clamp works great for grinding,I always grind before chopping, but I don't think it will matter. Or, I traded a bunch of rightwing for grinding services on the matching LW one time and now I have enough to last me the rest of my life, I only use them on hunting arrows

without me, my rifle is nothing

im grinding before chopping also. had just one done that I tried the chopper out.

Im going to dye a few , but it sucks to degrease them as the natural oil is what makes them so much nicer
