Coons on the trap line today

Recommended Posts

Some big fat boys on the trap line today. Coons are everywhere by me...if anyone wants to come get them I'll show you the spots. I live in Central NJ. These were all caught on DPs, I set three and caught three. I had 10 snares out but no luck...one was fired but it may have been a deer or something cause they busted through it lol. Think I'm done with coons this year. Still trying to cable restrain my first yote or fox.

I caught 4 today and three were mud balls. If I remember correctly you are semi-new to trapping. I would have let the one on the left go, fur don't look good from picture. That is a luxury of a DP trap. Just offering constructive criticism and help with the learning curve

there is a coon epidemic right now, you are about to see the next rabies boom like in the 90's but probably worse. their population has exploded out of control.

yea, you are right and I would have but he has been corn vacuuming my deer stand all year....he is the last and fourth one. He needed to go lol there is also a small population of turkey that just started back there so I wanted to help them out by taking out the egg snatcher. I used to have 8 or 9 coons on camera at one time....now none.

How long do you guys let them rest before you skin them??? I know rabies is an issue, I always wear gloves but just wondering. The one with the bad fur was real nasty and tried biting me...don't think he is positive but you never know. Any thoughts on this???

i skin as soon as i can but if it is cold out i will let the skins sit in barn for fat to firm up over night then flesh or put in freezer for a couple hours then flesh. i know a guy in animal control for a township. they send all the coons they catch to get tested. he recently told me like 90% are coming back positive for rabies.

If you skin right away, its slick as snot on a doorknob. The longer you wait the harder it is especially if the animal is sitting out in the cold. As far as rabies, treat every animal as if it has every disease know to man and use universal precautions. Don't stray from that and you should be good. I have skinned hundreds of coons and have worn gloves on every single one, I ain't no hero
