Ive had deer go into hinge cut areas as soon as I walked away. I was on a hill opposite of the hill I just cut with the saw still running and could see them going into the hinge cuts. Earlier this season I dropped some trees after green up and their was a shit load of them in there the next day eating all the freshly dropped browse.

I cut another section of trees today.. will post pics tomorrow. It's looking great! I can't wait to see some leaves bud!

It's going to let so much sunlight in when I'm done! I can't wait! Still got a lot of hinging and girdling to do on the hillside. I will continue when Temps and winds are better.

If you cut a few of the small to mid-sized maples down low they will stump sprout and create a buffet of maple browse as well as cover.  If you use a handheld broadcast spreader to spread some fertilizer around the area it boosts the protein content of the browse and the deer go crazy for it.

I'm wondering about getting other species of bryers or weeds/grasses...

It's all maple and ash, how do I get other species to grow? Will it just happen on its own?

Should I leaf blow the leaves to expose the dirt so the sun hits the soil?

You'll be surprised by what will grow there now that sunlight will be getting in.  Birds deposit seeds all over the place but they don't germinate in the cool shade of a mature forest.

 

The clear cuts behind me are full of blackberry, raspberry, and all kinds of herbaceous plants.

Blackberry will bring in more deer.

 

I had a couple of good-sized blackberry plants that I put in a couple of decades ago.  I came out one spring to see one bush covered with blossoms.  I thought to myself what a wonderful crop I'd get that year.  I came home from work the same day to see the bush without a single blossom.  My wife told me that the deer came in and it was nice to see them.  This is why I hunt deer.  Revenge for decimating my blackberry bumper crop.

Cut an hour tonight, started the left property line up by the house. My wife didn't want me cutting by the house, but she okayed it if I do just the edge to block the view of the nigh boring house.. so that's what I did. A 20 yard strip along the edge of the property.

I hope you're right. I hate to be doing all this and not see a difference :/

 

I picked out a tree for your stand, then I took a chainsaw to it lol. My property is gonna be groundblind only by time deer season gets here. No trees left lol.
