I don't know much about either gun but if you plan on hunting with one, you should try to hit the range with a variety of buckshot for each gun to see which patterns best before taking it afield.

I use my Mossberg 500.. No exceptions..  As far as shot I had always used 2 3/4 00 as it had always knocked a deer flat on its a$$ right where it stood each and every time.. UNTIL I shot one at 50-60 yards.. The deer was hit and a leg was broken apparently from a ball and ran with a broken leg for about 75 yards before piling up..  Further examination showed he was hit in the vitals with just 2 other balls... At that point I started thinking about a smaller shot.. A few deer later I shot a doe with 00 at about 35-40 yards.. Knocked her down cold where she stood.. she kicked that that death kick .. AND THEN got up and bolted  into the sunset never to be found..  That sealed the deal, I made the switch to 0 ..

I grew up with buckshot.  I think you would be better off with a 20ga single shot slugger... Rifled barrel, good scope...   Just like with bow - you get one shot make it count. Know your target, make a good shot selection.. Put it where it belongs and game over.  With the right scope and loads - realistically 150 yards deadly, and in the right hands - 200 is possible.    Why limit yourself to a scatter gun?  I look at all the possible deer hunting situations, and unless all you do is push drives through thick cover, I fail to see where buckshot is an advantage. (I grew up in Hyper Humus Sportsmans club - and 6-day was nothing but drives through thick swamps. Slugs were banned but looking back I think it would have been safer with slugs. We had two separate incidents where a member got shot with buckshot - those were my formative years and reinforces why I hate gang hunting for deer. I prefer it to be a solitary sport with one projectile).

Naw man.. I just got this thing about shot guns and scopes.. I just don't think they were made for each other.. Perhaps my thinking is a bit antiquated but, To me its ridiculous.. Besides, I do deep woods hunting.. All my shots are at close range.. Rarely over 50 yards.. I might consider using a slug  but its not legal without a scope in NJ and who needs a scope at that range?.. Not me that's for sure..

You only need movable iron sights, not a scope.

Have you considered a good sharp spear?

Hey I didn't know that.. I thought you had to have a scope.. But anyway.. The law says I need one of those, But my shooting skills at the ranges I expect to make a kill say I don't.. So i'll use what came with the gun.. Just that bead at the end of the barrel.. Works good if you practice a little.. And since I've been using the same gun for 40 years, I don't even have to use the bead anymore.. But I do anyway ..  ... Anyway, Down here in VA there are no such laws about scopes and iron sites on shot guns.. Me and a friend were discussing using slugs not to long ago and plan on going to the range and see just how accurate they are out to what ranges.. So I may give them a try in the future...
