  2. I am signed up for trapping course next month. Will be 55 soon but my daughters, 15 & 17 are also signed up. Late to the game for me but hopefully it sticks for them. Will be looking for all the help and advice I can get from here on out.
  3. I am putting my paperwork in tomorrow for retirement from public education. Turn 55 in May and will be out in June after 28 years. Not done teaching so I already signed a contract to teach in a private school. Pay cut on paper but when I add my retirement check in it is a big jump for me. Still love what I am doing and the coaching is like an extra part time job. Plenty of time for hunting and family time and still money to be made. Very good discussion and to hear others perspective.
  4. I assume the average age of a trapper is probably in there 50’s or even higher. To the few guys on this site that teach the trapper’s education class and are apart of NJ Trappers association is there any young blood in this sport that traps? I know a few kids 18-20 that trap a raccoon or a fox here or there but nothing like when we were younger
  5. And when guys say "I trapped a bunch of coons" or "I trapped some yote", you will have people say, "What did you do with it? Did you waste the resource?" If you don't have the equipment/space/time to put up the fur, how do you answer that other than say, "Oh, sorry. I won't do that again. Never mind." ?? I'll be honest, that's one reason I don't ... If I take a coon, is it ethical to say, "Well, I am trapping them just to lower the numbers, and will just leave them for nature to clean up?"
  6. Last night, the Georgia Legislature adjourned sine die from its 2024 legislative session. This session, the legislature passed House Bill 1018, which prohibits the use of firearm/ammunition specific merchant category codes by payment processors. View the full article
  7. How long are we gonna beat on this dead horse. If you really wanna make a difference... Do Something . Become A Trapper !

  9. Some people "need" to retire but can't. Some people "can" retire but don't. It's the people that can no longer work (physically) but have to in order to live is the problem. That's where SS helps. It may make the difference between being able to retire or continuing to ruin your body and shorten your life or quality of life. There are all kinds of negative consequences for people working into their 70's and 80"s. They are displacing a younger person from getting that job. If you can afford to retire, you should. It only benefits the greater society. But, I know, who cares about that.
  10. I know I am going to take some heat over this response but here goes. I think your idea is admirable and shows great love for you daughter but I do not agree you should live your life so you can hand here all your assets when you die. It has always been my philosophy to raise my children to be self sufficient and the only way In my opinion that can be done is not hand them everything they might want. Now I am not saying dont help them because everyone needs help once in a while and that giving that help is enjoyable for you and your children. If you do it to often they do not learn the lessons you learned from your hard work. You risk them becoming dependent upon Dad for all their lives and when the day comes for dad to leave this earth, which surprisingly may come at any age not just after retirement, they may find themselves penny less and without the skills to take care of themselves because maybe dad dies in his early years after a illness that financially drains his resources leaving his children no cash just memories and I myself would like those memories to be of a relationship of love and learning how to stand on their own. Then when the days comes that you go if you do have a nice pot of gold to leave them they and their children can not only have some financial help with their childrens college or weddings etc and fond memories of a hard working Dad that taught them how to take care of themselves in a very unstable world. I followed those words of advice all my life. My father was a mason born of immigrants that broke his butt all his life and left little but what he did leave was a legacy of hard work and love of family and an example of how to take care of ones self and not depend on anyone and that was much better than all the money in the world.
  11. My favorite saying: "Enjoy life, it has an expiration date". I'm not advocating for irresponsibility. If you enjoy your job and want to keep working, then keep doing it. It's nice to have choices. Some people don't.
  12. You should retire as soon as you are financially able to do so and enjoy life without the stress of work every day. Hunt, Fish , Shoot, Enjoy grand kids but most of all ENJOY LIFE WHILE YOU CAN !! There is no guarantee you will see tomorrow !
  13. Can't really tell with just pics. Can look older or younger when capturing different postures. I'd guess that first one is older than many think. Old bucks get that roman nose(rise between eyes down to nose). other buck has the sunken back and sagging belly but could just be his posture at the moment the pic was taken. Can't go by the racks. They're not P&Y. Need more pics and coordinates to get a better feel. Welcome to the sight.
  14. There is NO right or wrong. You do what works for you and your family.
  15. I agree with Nomad, the first buck looks to 3, + or - a year.
  16. Your first post is pictures, I like you already @WeiszOldOwl !!! Welcome to the site!
  17. I understand that. Each one’s situation is different and you are doing what’s best for your situation. Flip side is no one knows how long they will live, age is just a number. If your happy doing what your doing then your doing the right thing. That’s all that matters.
  18. Very impressive stag- congratulations!
  19. Man it’s funny I get pics like that on my buddies 18 acres. Then I get pics like that on my spot I hunt in state woods/ Wharton state forest. The state woods I hunt gets hit real hard by gun clubs. I hunt a swamp deep in and I see bucks like that and If they are lucky to be 3 yr olds. The bucks like that on my buddies property, I would say 5 yr old.
